Funny how that old saying that , Life Comes Full Circle, can apply to many of us . In my case, I have very vivid memories of growing up and helping my maternal grandfather ( Bernardo De Marco ) making the family wine every year. We lived in an Italian neighborhood where most of our family and friends all made their version of the " Best Italian Wine", made in Jersey.
My job was to unload the grapes, pick off the stems and turn the handle of granpa's old hand press . Magically, grandpa transformed the grapes into beautifully styled red and white wines and he even used the stems to make grappa.
Newly made wines were not drunk for at least one year or more, while grandpa checked, tasted and turned his wine barrels. Now in looking back to his attention to detail, I have a much better understanding of the Latin saying; In Vino Veritas. Even after hearing that saying for years, did I really understand it's true meaning . In my youth, I thought that the more wine one drank, the more one babbled the truth.
The true meaning is, The Wine Can Not Lie. The grapes, the soil, the sun, the water, when and how picked and the wine makers personal technique, are captured in time. When you open a bottle of wine, it has no choice but to tell the Truth on how it came to exist.
